Notes

  • The exact number of people killed at Auschwitz is unknown; estimates range from 1.1 to 3 million. About 90 percent of Auschwitz victims were Jewish.
  • The Nazis built Auschwitz by converting Polish military barracks into a concentration camp.

Trivia

  • Auschwitz is located in the Polish town of Oświęcim.
  • The facility actually consisted of three camps: Auschwitz I, a concentration camp; Auschwitz II (Birkenau), an execution camp; and Auschwitz III (Monowitz), a labor camp.
  • The entrance to Auschwitz I bears the motto, "Arbeit macht frei," meaning, "Work will set you free." The letter "B" on the sign is upside down—a relic of the passive resistance the Jews showed while interred.
  • Anne Frank was briefly held in Auschwitz before being transferred to another camp.
  • Novelist Elie Wiesel survived Auschwitz.
  • Auschwitz was liberated on January 27th, 1945.
