I like the links to the other categories, but now for some reason I think it would look better with the content left-aligned instead of centered.--Hardvice (talk) 00:34, 20 January 2007 (EST)

I perfer it centered, but I'm not picky on this one. Left is fine, too, if somebody wants to change it. - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 09:05, 20 January 2007 (EST)

Crowded

Wow. This bad boy is very, very, very crowded. What should we do about it? Navs for each individual GN would be ridiculous, but I can't think of anything else.---- Ohmyn0.jpgOhmyn0talk.jpg 19:52, 4 April 2007 (EDT)

  • Obviously we'll do a second-season nav bar, but that doesn't really help this one. Perhaps after the second season or so we could split it into character-specific GN navbars (like all the people that appear in Hana's GNs, or all the people that appear in Ted's GNs), but that wouldn't be for awhile, and it still doesn't help the problem now. We could split it alphabetically, but I don't think that's a good idea either. I don't see a good solution. I think it'll just pretty big and that's gonna hafta work. :( — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:20, 4 April 2007 (EDT)
  • Perhaps split it into two (not with any category markers on the left side), named characters & unnamed characters, on the same bar. Actually - I'll play with it and let you see it. ---- Ohmyn0.jpgOhmyn0talk.jpg 23:37, 5 April 2007 (EDT)
    • That didn't work... nevermind...---- Ohmyn0.jpgOhmyn0talk.jpg 23:43, 5 April 2007 (EDT)
      • I honestly don't think there's any problem with how it looks. Even after another dozen or so people, I still think it'll be fine. A bit large, but not unreasonable. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:29, 6 April 2007 (EDT)
        • Maybe we could split into named and unnamed characters. --Hero!(talk)(contribs)
          • It's not a bad idea to organize it, but it certainly wouldn't make it any smaller--in fact, it would be slightly larger. It would also make it a little harder to find a particular name--rather than checking one alphabetical list, one would have to check two alphabetical lists. I still don't think there's anything wrong with it as it is. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 06:51, 17 June 2007 (EDT)

Crowded, part 2

  • This one looks pretty ridiculous now. You can't even find people in the big mush-up of links. I'm not sure if there's any better solution without somehow categorizing the GN characters. Most of them are so minor that there's no good way to implement the system we have for episodic characters. I kind of like the idea of separate navbars for each of the main character's graphic novels. It would allow us to include "See Also" links to that character's novels, as well. One really neat idea would be to include a (small) graphic novel image of the main character on the left side (where categories would usually go) since we don't really have any GN likenesses of most of the main characters. Something like this:

  • It's a big job, but it sounds fine to me. Some initial thoughts--not objections, just things to consider...I suppose the person we would use would be the one listed as the focus on Portal:Issues? Most of them would be pretty clear, but a few stand out. For instance, would all the characters from Maya y Alejandro be listed under "Chandra Suresh-Related Graphic Novel Characters"? Hana's bar would probably be the biggest. Some characters would have more than one bar (Mr. Ellis would be under "Mr. Bennet-Related Graphic Novel Characters" and "Eden-Related Graphic Novel Characters"). Some other concerns: a few bars would be very very small with very little chance of ever growing--for instance, Ted's bar would have the Pharmatech scientist and that's it--I doubt there will be too many more Ted-related GNs. Also, do we do separate bars for the future characters? (Future Hiro, Future Peter, and Future Niki have all been the focus of their own GNs.) Just a few things to consider. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 07:33, 11 October 2007 (EDT)
    • I would also personally prefer something like the bar below, just to make it a little more streamlined and not so tall. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 07:41, 11 October 2007 (EDT)

  • The character picture is definitely optional. However, if we put it outside the bar, I'd rather see it without the blue background, comme ça:

I'd also like to really avoid putting two navbars on any character. Not sure how we could do that. Maybe something like the current characternav, only with categories for each "main" character. As for avoiding the odd ones (like Ted's folks), we could just do the principal cast, Hana, and one for "miscellaneous" novels.--Hardvice (talk) 14:52, 11 October 2007 (EDT)
I'll see what I can work up for categorizing the characters. I like the idea of "miscellaneous novels" if we need. I agree with you on avoiding two navbars even at the expense of bending our rules....As for the look of the bar itself, I like the image. Wouldn't you know it, I made my last post while at work, where I have a computer more ancient than Kensei himself, and which only employs IE. It looks great on that browser, but like crap on Firefox. :) Having the image off to the side looks a little odd to me. This is more what I was envisioning:

Making the left side rounded also makes the picture look more like it's part of the bar:

I tried experimenting with the color behind the picture, but the darker blue (CCD5F4) is the only one that really looks good, regardless of the image. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 19:46, 11 October 2007 (EDT)
Which version of the bar is best? I personally prefer one of the two bottom ones (the very bottom moreover), but I'm biased. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:12, 11 October 2007 (EDT)
  • The bottom one is definitely my favorite.--Hardvice (talk) 23:52, 11 October 2007 (EDT)

  • This is just a quick list I made, nothing set in stone. Feel free to change it around as you see fit. (Incidentally, there are 78 characters total.) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:27, 11 October 2007 (EDT)
    • This isn't as bad as I thought, actually. And yeah, we can probably combine Niki's whole clan into one bar if we want. Incidentally, how many dupes do we have? Is it worth doing multiple bars like actornav/crewnav/etc (which would probably mean axing the pictures--does anybody but me actually like the pictures?) or are we better off just choosing one category for such folks?--Hardvice (talk) 22:01, 11 October 2007 (EDT)
      • Not bad at all...As it stands above, there are no duplicates. Most of the future characters appeared in Walls, which were narrated by both Future Niki and Future Peter--I figured "future graphic novels" was a better umbrella, and that way we could fit Sparrow Redhouse in there, too. Mr. Ellis appears in Fathers and Daughters which is Mr. Bennet-centric, but he really fits more with Eden, seeing as he's her dad and all. But that's it for the duplicates. I don't think it's necessary to do multiple bars (yet). Funny thing about the graphic novel characters--most only appear once, or at least in only one series. I have a hard time envisioning somebody not appearing in an episode, yet appearing in multiple graphic novels narrated by multiple people. Sparrow Redhouse is about the only one I can think of that might eventually fall into that category. If we ever come across that situation, I'd say we should deal with it when it comes up--probably choose one category and maybe do something with a See Also section....Personally, I really like the pictures. Most of the character pages could stand to have a few images, anyway. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:58, 11 October 2007 (EDT)
        • That, and as I mentioned, we have very few pics of the main characters in illustrated form. And hey, if we combine the Hawkins-Sanderses, we can use the family photo from D.L.'s book.--Hardvice (talk) 23:02, 11 October 2007 (EDT)
          • I'll grab some caps of the main guys now, even. Who should we use for the misc? I'd lean towards Sylar or Eden.--Hardvice (talk) 23:03, 11 October 2007 (EDT)
            • For the miscellaneous category, I prefer Sylar over Eden only because I believe in using Jason Badower's art whenever I can. :) But in all honesty, what would it look like if we used a shot of multiple characters? Maybe the Burnt Toast Diner scene from Road Kill (yes, another Jason nod). Would it look funny, or too small in a 100×125 image? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:10, 11 October 2007 (EDT)
              • It might work. I just did the H-S family portrait and it holds up surprisingly well.--Hardvice (talk) 23:25, 11 October 2007 (EDT)
          • Also, I just noticed that both of Peter's GNs feature only episode characters. Weird.--Hardvice (talk) 23:04, 11 October 2007 (EDT)
            • I probably should have thought of this before I capped all of these at 100x125, but are we going to subdivide Portal:Graphic Novel Characters, too? If so, we may need bigger images.--Hardvice (talk) 23:51, 11 October 2007 (EDT)
              • Funny, I just got back from my weekend vacation and went to check if the split had been made or not (I'm all for it, by the way). I went through the portal, and I thought the same thing. I suppose it would need to be split. I don't mind it as it is now, but it's going to get really yucky by the end of the season, not to mention after a couple of seasons. Yeah, I guess it does need to be subdivided, and by centric character makes the most sense. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:42, 14 October 2007 (EDT)
              • Actually, if the images are going to be used on Template:PortalGNCharacterNav, 100x125 works just fine. If you still want to reupload them, it won't change anything but clarity and resolution. It's a good idea, but there's no rush, I suppose. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:10, 17 October 2007 (EDT)
                • Yeah, I guess I forgot that {{PortalCharacter}} is only, like 75px wide.--Hardvice (talk) 16:59, 17 October 2007 (EDT)
